Skyjack has lift manufacturing plants in Arizona and Illinois. The company was founded in 1985, and acquired by Linamar Corporation in Canada in 2002. Skyjack continues to manufacture high quality vertical mast lifts, electric scissor lifts, rough terrain scissor lifts, articulating booms, and other heavy duty lifting equipment. If you are planning to find a Skyjack scissor lift for sale, here is some useful information to help you with your purchase.

What is a Skyjack Lift?

A Skyjack lift can refer to several types of machines, but typically means an electric (DC) scissor lift or a rough terrain (RT) scissor lift manufactured by the company. These two types of lifts have different features and slightly different uses. In general, a scissor lift has a rectangular platform to hold workers and/or materials, which can be raised in the air with a hydraulic system. The lift has an engine and four pneumatic tires for moving it around, although most lifts only have a top speed of 3 to 5 miles per hour. Lifts are much safer to use than a ladder, especially when talking about heights that are 30 or 40 feet in the air.

Two-wheel drive electric scissor lifts are a great option for indoor use in warehouses or similar buildings with high ceilings. The charge on an electric scissor lift’s battery lasts about 8 hours before it needs to be recharged. Building maintenance and warehousing are the primary uses for a DC scissor lift.

A four-wheel drive rough terrain scissor lift is built for outdoor use in areas where pavement hasn’t been laid down yet. They can traverse mud, sand, gravel, dirt or grass. The tires on an RT scissor lift are typically more sturdy than the ones on an electric lift, to avoid having a flat. RT scissor lifts generally have a leveling feature for the lift that allows them to be used on a mild slope (between zero and 40 degrees, depending on the make and model). Rough terrain scissor lifts run on gas or diesel engines, so they are not suitable for use in enclosed spaces. They are commonly used on construction sites, for working on utility poles, on landscaping projects and other similar outdoor jobs that require lifting workers and materials up above the ground.

Sometimes, users will refer to a vertical mast lift, such as a Skyjack SJ16, when talking about a Skyjack Lift.

How Much is a Skyjack Scissor Lift?

The purchase price of a Skyjack scissor lift for sale will vary based on whether the machine is new or used, the type of engine (electric vs. fuel), the maximum height that the lift can extend to, what region of the country you are in, and other factors. As an example, a new electric Skyjack SJ3219 with a 18-foot, 6-inch lift height retails for around $12,000 in 2022. A new rough terrain Skyjack SJ6832 RT with a maximum lift height of 38 feet retails for around $50,000 in 2022.

Due to the high up-front costs of a Skyjack scissor lift, it may be a better option to buy a used one, or rent the piece of equipment if it is only needed for short-term jobs. At FleetUp Marketplace, we have some used DC Skyjack scissor lifts for sale for as little as $5,000, for example. The price of a used scissor lift will vary depending on its age, the number of hours on it, its maintenance schedule, what region you’re in, and other factors.

Renting a used Skyjack scissor lift can be a great option if you only need the piece of equipment for a short time. Rental prices for used scissor lifts as of 2022 are:

  • 19-Foot DC Scissor Lift: $100 – $150/day, $350 – $500/week, and $900 – $1,200 per month
  • 32-Foot DC Scissor Lift: $120 – $170/day, $400 – $700/week, and $1,400 – $1,600 per month
  • 32-Foot RT Scissor Lift (Gas or Diesel Powered): $150 – $200/day, $475 – $600/week, and $1,550 – $2,000 per month

These prices will vary depending on your location.

How Much Does a 32′ Scissor Lift Cost?

A scissor lift with a maximum lift height of 32-feet can retail for as much as $50,000 in 2022. If buying a used 32-foot Skyjack scissor lift for sale in 2022, expect to pay between $7,500 and $15,000.

How Many Hours Does a Scissor Lift Last?

Scissor lifts can last an incredible number of hours (over the course of many years) if they are properly maintained and cared for.

Some contractors have reported having scissor lifts that lasted 30 years with the proper maintenance.

The hours are calculated differently on a scissor lift when compared to other types of lifts. The clock on a scissor lift only calculates the time when the scissor lift is in motion, either driving from one location to another, and raising or lowering the lift. Once the scissor lift is stabilized and the workers and materials have been raised to their working height, the clock stops. Other types of lifts calculate hours even when the machine is idle. This is why the hours on a scissor lift tend to be fairly low, even if the machine has been used for several years. With proper maintenance, some gas and diesel scissor lifts have been known to last up to 5,000 hours.

Can Two People Be on a Skyjack Scissor Lift?

Whether a Skyjack scissor lift can hold two people depends on the type and model. Electric scissor lifts have lower weight capacities, so they might not be able to hold two workers plus a sizable amount of construction materials. For example, the SJ3215 electric scissor lift has a maximum weight capacity of 600 pounds, and the SJ3219 has a maximum of 500 pounds.

Here’s a really important thing to note, however. These models of Skyjack scissor lifts each have a 3-foot extension platform. If the extension is used, the weight has to be distributed evenly between the main platform and the extension. For the SJ3215, that means 350 pounds on the main platform and 250 pounds on the extension. That doesn’t leave much room for materials. For the SJ3219, that means the main platform and the extension could have a maximum of 250 pounds on each of them. That’s cutting it close, depending on the size of your contractors and any construction materials they need to lift with them.

It’s a different story with rough terrain scissor lifts from Skyjack. The Skyjack SJ6826 RT has a maximum weight capacity of 1,250 pounds. That’s plenty of capacity for two or three workers and a load of construction materials. More workers means the job gets done more quickly, obviously. The Skyjack SJ6832 has a maximum weight capacity of 1,000 pounds, which is still plenty of capacity for two workers.
